Superintendent,

Howard S. Cohen. Ed.D.

From the Superintendent

News Highlights

Welcome to all students, parents, teachers, staff, and community members to the 2009-2010 school year. I am honored to have been chosen as Superintendent to serve the South San Francisco Unified School District. South San Francisco schools have a very rich and deep history of community pride and engagement. I have had the opportunity to meet many teachers, staff, administrators and South San Francisco City Officials who attended South San Francisco schools and have returned to provide service to their home community. I am fond of saying that South San Francisco is the biggest small town I have had the privilege to serve.

I have had the opportunity to visit all South San Francisco Unified School District school sites and many classrooms since the beginning of the school year and I find the students to be respectful, studious and highly motivated to learn. Our teachers are engaged with their classes and have been hard at work since the opening of our schools. South San Francisco Unified School District administrators are highly dedicated and committed to their schools. I find that school and district staff members are friendly, hard working and service oriented.

My commitment to you is to build upon the successes that the South San Francisco Unified School District, the Board of Trustees and the staff have created; working with parents, community and employees to do all we can to prepare students to be successful. As wonderful and effective as our past has been, we have much hard work ahead of us in order to meet and exceed the challenges faced by our students, staff, parents and community.

Our District is in Year 2 of not making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). The AYP is how the Federal Government measures the number of our students who are scoring Proficient or Advanced on the annual California Standards Test. The data shows that all of our schools are challenged, in particular, with meeting the learning needs of English Learners, Special Education students, and students considered to be in the low socio-economic class.

Thirty percent of all South San Francisco Unified School District students are scoring below Proficient in the Basic category. This means we, as a District, have to improve learning for all of our students, regardless of ethnicity or income level.

We have work to do. We have to eliminate the achievement gap for the above mentioned groups of students and raise the bar so that each and every South San Francisco Unified School District student is prepared for college, if they so choose, and prepared to begin a productive work-life as they continue to learn throughout their lives. We want every South San Francisco Unified School District student to have high level choices in their lives and to be prepared for work in the 21st century.

I look forward to working with students, staff, parents and community as we create a Strategic Plan this school year (stay tuned for notification) and as we continue to provide district-wide researched-based practices known to be effective in improving teaching and learning for our students. The South San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education has been very proactive in strongly supporting the use of school and classroom-based student performance data, direct service for improving English Language Learning, and for focused improvement in the South San Francisco Unified School District instructional program.

Toward this end, we welcome two staff members who will work primarily supporting schools and classrooms. David Laird is the Director of Student Performance, Program Evaluation and Instructional Intervention (Assessment and Accountability) and Adolfo Melara is the new Assistant Superintendent for English Learner Services and Student Learning Support. Both staff members come with strong backgrounds. David has been with the District since October 2008 and has a doctoral degree in education and has a strong background in data analysis and instructional improvement. He was formerly the Senior Research Analyst for the Boston Public Schools and provided instructional support for the 143 schools in that district. Adolfo comes from the Stockton Unified School District where he served as Director of Elementary Education and Program Improvement. Adolfo, bilingual in English and Spanish, worked with twenty-four Program Improvement schools and was a key liaison with the Spanish speaking parents and community.

We have much to do. I find the work ahead challenging and exhilarating. South San Francisco Unified School District Board of Trustees and staff are very responsive and eager to meet the challenges ahead. We look forward to engaging with all parents and community members in the South San Francisco Unified School District as we work together improving learning for all students.

ALERT

We wish to alert our community and parents of an incident that occurred earlier today, Thursday, October 1, 2009.  The details of the incident are below.

This morning while walking to school, two ECHS students noticed an adult male walking behind them as they walked along Grand Avenue. When the man came up along side of the two girls, he turned, put his hand in his pocket and began to walk in tandem with them. The girls became afraid because he was wearing a green bandana that covered most of his face so the students picked up their pace. The man did likewise.

As a result, the girls began running and were chased by the man. He continued pursuit all the way to the 7-11 Store on Mission Road at which time the students flagged down a passing car for help. Once the car stopped to assist, the man turned and ran in the other direction.

The man is described as: Hispanic, 5’6" to 5’10" of medium build, with a large black and blue tattoo on his left tricep. He was wearing a clean white polo shirt, dark jeans and tennis shoes and covered his face with a green bandana.

The girls arrived safely at ECHS, albeit shaken.  The Principal notified the police and the parents.  Schools’ counselors have met with the students.

The District takes the safety of our students very seriously.  We share this information with you in the hope that you will use it to help educate your own children.

H1N1 Flu Update to the San Mateo County Educational Community from the Director of Health San Mateo County Health System

The Health System is working with all community partners and healthcare providers to ensure the County is ready to face the new flu season. This flu season will be much more complex than previous years with the arrival of the H1N1 (swine) flu. It is therefore important for everyone to stay informed and take steps to help lessen the effects of the flu on our community.

Schools educators and staff can play an invaluable role in helping to prepare for, and prevent the spread of the flu by reviewing and sharing the following information and guidance:

1. Vaccines: There are two types of flu shots this year and both are very important. The seasonal flu vaccine is available now and it’s recommended that everyone over the age of six months get vaccinated as soon as possible. The H1N1 (swine) flu vaccine is not yet available, though it is expected to begin arriving later this fall. All vaccines will be given primarily by people’s healthcare providers, as well as distributed through flu clinics located throughout the County. For updated information on vaccine availability and a full listing of vaccine clinics, visit the Health System’s website at www.smhealth.org/swineflu and click on "Vaccines". You can also get updates and clinic information from the County Flu Hotline at (650) 573-3927.

2. County Flu Website: The Health System has a new Flu Website designed to provide easy access to timely and accurate information. There is a section with guidance specifically for schools which will be updated with new information such as vaccine availability and school closings. Visit www.smhealth.org/swineflu and click on "Guidance for Specific Groups."

3. New Flu Brochure: "What’s New with the Flu" is a new County educational piece available in four languages, English, Spanish, Chinese, and Tagalog. You can view and download the brochure at www.smhealth.org/flubrochure. You can also order brochures free of charge by contacting the Health System at pmachado@co.sanmateo.ca.us or call (650) 573-3726. Please include the quantity you need by language and where to ship them. You can also download flyers and posters from the Centers for Disease Control and the California Department of Public Health. Visit www.smhealth.org/swineflu and click on "Helpful Materials" for a full listing.

4. Health Tips: To help prevent the spread of both seasonal and H1N1 (swine) flu, please urge your students, teachers, staff, and parents to:

  • Get a flu shot
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or sleeve
  • Wash hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand cleaner
  • Stay home when sick

Thank you for your efforts and commitment to the health and well-being of our children and the community.
